The Control of Japanese Beetles
You know it is summer in Denver when we start handpicking Japanese Beetles (Popillia japonica) off plants in our yards. The beetles favor roses, grapes & Virginia Creeper vines, but the pests are generalists and attack many plants and trees found in yards. They appear in late June and persist through September.
How Do You Control Mountain Pine Beetles?
The best time to check for Mountain Pine Beetle infestation is in winter. Check for “pitch tubes” on the trunks of your trees. The tree forms these tubes to flush out the intrusive beetles. If you see some, use a hatchet to cut off a bark piece to see if the underneath wood is discolored bluish-gray. If so, the tree needs immediate removal.
